The lion city
Let's begin the journey with the famous tale of how Singapore earned the nickname of The Lion City. In 1299 Sang Nila Utama, the emperor of the Srivijayan Empire, which included Malaysia, Singapore and all of Sumatra decided that his empire needed a new capital and set sail to visit the islands off the coast of Sumatra. The sailing party landed at the mouth of the present-day Singapore River. The emperor saw a strange animal with an orange body, black head and a white breast. It moved fast and quickly disappeared into the jungle. His chief minister told him that it was probably a lion. As the lion was considered a sign of good fortune, he took this as a good omen and decided to stay and build a new city which he then named “Singapura” – derived from the Malay words “Singa” for Lion and “Pura” for city.
Here comes the gracious lions to kick start another beautiful year, starting with SGX with their signature lion dance motif for many years. 2019 single piece design welcomes the eight lions back since 2015 and this round in their strongest color tone, accessorized with a golden embossed floral decorated box. The 2018 lions pair are just as elegant in silky gold and the royal ruby. Also in pairs and using the character " ji " (吉) and " fu " (福) is their 2016 horizontal packets but in a much brighter shade of the gold and red. 2017 pair is the sweetest, in a pink and yellow background with colorful blossoms raining upon the yellow, blue, pink and purple lions; And finally the 2015 pair that has the sharpest pink and gold with the eight lions and their "fu" balls ^^
Continuing with the blue hue is 99.co trio with azure buildings and abstract illustration of the dragon and lion dance while Property Guru embossed blue strokes of their smaller building and lion dance paired with auspicious Chinese New Year icons and the fortune god definitely taking a different appearance from the others. Scroll down further to find more building themes from Holiday Inn Atrium and L'zzie or hop back to my main 2019 page to find those ancient Chinese and modern architectures used by many companies.
OCBC Private lions are the same as their premier ones but they come in a fabric casing with a die-cut window for both the lions to peep out. Prudential had a dashing floral motif the previous year, this time round they decided to bring out the lion instead and so did Vedure the award winning aesthetic clinic with a bigger and bolder version. Meanwhile PurSoft took away their zodiac, all twelve of them, maintaining the one landscape and one portrait layout, they used the lion and gold fish instead... kind of a bummer as I was actually looking forward to see the pigs ><
Feeling joyfully sweet to get these floral sets; Love Bonito is taking it simple with a modern touch in their 3pcs set while Tung Lok big and bold peonies are indeed a treat for me while from the supermarkets (thanks to Mei Fern and Apryl) are just as beautiful. Prime comes in a bright yellow envelope casing housing eight pieces of colorful floral vs Fairprice 5pcs of peonies illustration. My latest addition to my floral garden is from National Environment Agency which they have continued the soft shades from 2018.
Literally just a handful of Hari Raya packets from Singapore so having the small size Fairprice sampul set and Passion beautiful floral pair that comes in a gorgeous holder are a real bonus, big thanks to Mei Fern (again). Back to the CNY series, Passion single floral design is just as lovely in pink. We also have the similar vibrant colors from e21 Employment and another with beautiful tall flaps from Orchid Country Club that caught the attention of many collectors. The New Paper took on a more somber shade giving us front and back adjoining floral while Fuji Xerox presented a die-cut effect of the floral using contrasting background colors.
If you like the die-cut effect from Fuji, you will be over the moon with the real die-cut beauties. Jobstreet has the same design with Business Federation but a different Chinese character "fu" and is also not an actual die cut so the feel is totally different. QBE went a step further with a beautiful floral flap and took on two different colors as well as two different Chinese characters.
Continuing the finance series from Singapore are non other than my favorite cheongsam from Standard Chartered Private and they are absolutely gorgeous in every way, from the colorful floral inserts to the the die-cut key-hole designed casing and the finishing quality of the paper! Their mass market set of five is also a winner too with a traditional méi-huā, 梅花 paint brush art that exude an otherworldly exquisiteness and beautiful elegance. The plum blossoms is a symbol of winter as well as a harbinger of spring as they bloom most vibrantly amidst the winter snow. While the mass market set are painted in red, the premier also carrying the same design are transformed into a yellow paradise, an imperial color in traditional Chinese color symbolism, representing power, royalty, and prosperity.
UBS is definitely the highlight of my 2019 Singapore collection for me. The 2 bold sets of 4 pieces floral montage each featuring a beautiful pair of different bird speicies that is auspicious and meaningful for the CNY. I still feel over the moon whenever I look at them and can never get enough of the beauty!
Next we have the lovely MUFG trio taking on embossed birdies and peonies with a vibrant color choice while Lion Global front and back duo featured a simple and clean background with a pair of adorable chubby tweeters. Moving on with the fishes it's the pairs from Alliance Bernstein and Citibank Private mother-child gold fish in bright magenta with light flora background, swimming gracefully showing off it's beautiful fins and tail. Citigold front-back matching trio in golden brown, tiffany blue and chili red has a lovely soft touch finishing to their flatten floral illustration.
Next is CIMB, always a notch above with the colors, paper, texture and size... an obvious difference against the Malaysia version. Take a look at the above do re mi fa, in this case "fa" for far more better (lol). More floral motif and the one that caught my attention at first glance is non other than JP Morgan and it's golden "fu" surrounded by stunning peonies with a textured Chinese knot.
Singapura Finance featured a pair of pink blossom montage in teal and red, lovely and what's not to like about Bank of Singapore; After their grand feathertail betta fish piece last year, it's time for the peonies to bloom and they are bigger, brighter and absolutely lovelier!
I am loving the softer tone as well as the textured floral from Westpac. They are simply a pleasant sight. Hong Leong Asset Management kept their floral illustration simpler as compared to Aviva that continues to surround their " fu " (福) with textured floral year after year. HSBC is totally of a different design compared to the few versions from Malaysia, keeping it simple yet beautiful with a lovely floral pair and one of my favorites from them so far. Check out the MYS delights over at the $$$ Vault (click here).
Chinese poems and four-word idioms were used to decorate Chinese fans by using calligraphy pens during the olden days. Nowadays we can find colors and beautiful floral illustration on fans like the Chinese fan casing used by Deutsche Bank and the plum blossoms used by Barclays yellow and rouge pair below.
Fun fact: The Chinese character for "fan" (扇) is etymologically derived from a picture of feathers under a roof.
Euler Hermes an international credit insurance company became fully part of the Allianz Group in 2018 and this is their first pair of red packet showing off the world famous and beautiful buildings. How many of them can you name? Next up is the financial experts with their zodiac illustration and we have the more common one from UOB; Using just circles to round up their boss hog while separating their mass, commercial and private with colors like before. The more livelier piggies from Linden group has a sweet outlook with their color choice of yellow and pink, lovely!
The next few oinkers are absolutely unique and beautiful. Aberdeen pink and blue die-cut pair is catchy with just a simple ear and nose while Allianz Global Investors featured a gorgeous kaleidoscopic die-cut edition. Schroders once again caught my attention with their colorful choice of floral inserts matched with a simple die-cut piggy casing. Not forgetting the famous Deutsche Bank and Credit Suisse, their yellow, pink and golden pigs respectively and collectively looked stunning together.
Great Eastern Singapore and Malaysia has similar designs in terms of color and background but the one apparent difference is the chubby piglet that Singapore adopted while Malaysia went with a floral pattern.
Nothing can beat the BOC zodiac buzz and not just one but two delightful sets. The normal version of four pieces had the twelve friends sitting down for a big reunion meal while the big VIP set of twelve came in a box featuring the full zodiac up front and a bigger half-face illustration behind. Hop over to my zodiac page to catch the round table and the zoom in view to get a closer look.
Above is NHB twelve front facing zodiac that I wished were bigger in size for us to admire the unique illustration. Another piglet that I wished were more prominent would be HP Singapore GSB. Since 2016 they have continued with the 8pcs sets using one different Chinese Character every year, i.e. Chun 春 in 2016, Fu 福 in 2017, Wang 旺 in 2018 and Ji 吉 in 2019. Keeping the zodiac on it's flap, this year piglet can be hardly seen while it's flap layout is no longer the document flowchart shape as previous. The highlight for this year is definitely the three different designs (the blue, orange and green) and it was pretty difficult to gather them all. Don't miss out the other 4pcs set below that is also from HP Singapore but printed solely for the Singapore business only.
Moving on with the piggly wigglies we have Mediacorp 4pcs set featuring three pink wiggles, one weight lifting, one holding an angpow and another with a sycee; colorful, joyful and fun! Courts four piggies are much smaller but bringing us just as many colors and also a little lion dancing flavor as well.
From the creative world we have quite a few delightful designs to feast our eyes upon. Z&Z Creation six happy pigs are dressed in traditional red, each carrying an auspicious charm backed by different vibrant colors. Natsuki Photography has a softer color selections and probably with the most pig faces on any sets of red packets maybe... Oh and here comes Pacific Light charging through and so we have the winner with the most pigs in a set. Next is Shin Min with the many faces of circles especially in Chinese auspicious symbols like the orange, pig face, lantern, coin and of course the lucky number eight. Not forgetting Miele that chose to use different patterns to fill up their four side view pigs while Yitai cute little golden piglet pair is surrounded by hot-stamped floral.
F&B is bringing out the bacon with Si Chuan Dou Hua gold and silver pigs lightly scented and served in a yellow box while Starbucks is brewing up pink and white piggies. The 4pcs set is pretty hard to get and I am just super lucky to have the best sidekick ever! Check out the zodiac I have from them since 2016 below.
Introducing illustrator 阿果 (Ā guǒ) with his sweet fairy-tale creation for De'Quek Trading as well as Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre. I am definitely a fan as they remind me of those magical childhood moments of storybooks time. You can find more of the artist dreamy impression over at his facebook page. Also carrying the calming baby blue together with a playful pink is Cetaphil combining simple floral patterns with a catchy black porky that I absolutely adore!
Forum is going loud in pink with their mr cool pineapple (萝MEO) and miss pearly piggy (猪LIET) duo. The pink fever continues to sweeten up the day with Elisa Litz cat and dog pair in 2018 and the pink piggy in 2019. Check out the three little pigs from Orchard Gateway, these little packets are adorable with the smiley eyes, snout and hands (front legs).
DDB created a red packet for selfie; The idea was to hold the packet in front of our face, capture and post the selfie on Instagram to greet the year. I believe it was a cool idea but wasn't executed thoroughly. The other piggy bank design is just as interesting with a slot opening on the top just like a real coin container. Here comes another piggy from Porcelain, the skin specialist with a rating of (as per their website as of Oct 2019) 95% happy customers ^^ Lanvin is next and also has a porky, a tiny little one in red.
Next from the transportation line is Majestic Fast Ferry with a rather sexy illustration of a curvy pig and it's kissing lip while Grab purple hog can literally move upwards and downwards by sliding the die-cut casing, the same goes with their bowl (look out for the other bowl below) and car piece. Jeep and Audi both didn't need anything else but their prestige logo to deliver the elegance and class. If you love colors like I do, Perennial has an absolutely stunning trio with a vibrant flow and captivating image of the happy hogs. Also filling up the year with colors from the jungle and the rest of the zodiac members is M Malls by Mercatus.

More big belly nelly(s) that are single but full of charm; SMP&T porky with those beautiful blossoms and butterflies, Zepp @ BigBox babe, NTUC Club hearty swine, Watami "Fu" pig, UFM and BHG porky face, Kusmi Tea flowery hog, Zero happy Pumbaa in orange, Search Staffing four adorable golden piggies and Chateau three little pigs. Some of the other fun adorable characters are here to cheer the year of boar as well; Logitech Line Friends, Koko Krunch Koala, Doga 7pcs party friends set, Universal Studio 3pcs Minion set, Merries bunnies which is just a pair compared to Malaysia's 4pcs set (find them over at my Baby & Friends page here) and the delightful pair of Mr Bean boy and bean girl.
We Bare Bears follows three adoptive bear brothers: Grizzly, Panda and Ice Bear; they were premiered on Cartoon Network in 2015 and won the The British Academy Children's Awards hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) in 2016. Both Azora and Singtel brought these adventurous bears to Singapore for a different taste of culture and lifestyle. Besides AIA teddies below, find the other adorable bear set over at my 2019 Baby & Friends page (click here)
Fun Facts: The name teddy bear comes from former United States President Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, which originated from an incident on a bear hunting trip in Mississippi. An American black bear was hunted down and tied to a willow tree which Roosevelt refused to shoot as it was unsportsmanlike. He instructed that the bear be killed to put it out of its misery and it became the topic of a political cartoon by Clifford Berryman in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902. It then inspired Morris Michtom a toymaker who created a tiny soft bear cub and put it in the shop window with a sign "Teddy's bear"
AIA has three very different designs, a pair of adorable four-eyed teddies, another pair of thick rubbery floral "fu" with the same floral emerging from the flap and lastly a single red piece celebrating their 100th year in insurance service.
Just because they are standalone designs doesn't make them any less appealing. Hence for the collectors who skips the singles, look at what they are missing out and taking the lead is the finance team with butterflies from BNP Paribas & Statestreet while Natixis & AXA both have similar floral arrangement and beautiful quality paper finishing, the later added a pair of hummingbirds hovering over the golden fu; Amundi pink lady with a mint colored flap is quite delightful followed by the elegant fabric piece from Julius Bar. Just like BNP, Hong Leong Finance took on a clean sophisticated look with shade of the traditional red and gold hot stamping. The horizontals from Goldman Sachs, Indosuez, M&G and Raiffeisen Bank are just as lovely each with it's own floral illustration, from the big peony to the golden mei hua tree, to a floral flap and lastly to the flat mei hua artwork in red rubby; Oh did you know the BNP butterflies are 3D? Let us take a swim with the charming fishes from NTUC Income, Maybank, Eastspring Invesments and AON beautiful fabric pair.
Moving away from the Finance section, Tiger Balm has a bright minty piece of front -back matching vibrant pink peonies and fancy tail and crown birdies. Window views of flowers are blooming in both Sembcorp and Epson singleton this year while Grand Shanghai is no longer using their maidens but switched to cheongsam & pearl motif instead. Not forgetting another elegant flower pair from Merci that is silky smooth. My two latest addition are the elegant golden blossom from Esso LPG, the six rubbery single designs comes in box with the same design while WMF is dishing up a healthy blossoming meal with their Germany made casserole and pot.
Before moving on to the floral duos, we have the single flower stem from Getty Image and Nespresso with the latter standing out (and tall) in the lovely Tiffany blue, maintaining the size of their packets but giving us more colors! After an absolutely breathtaking floral set last year, Starhub went from set to single and colorful to just pink. While they carried on with the lovrly flap design, print and paper quality, it was still a little disappointing for us collectors. Here comes the duos, Marigold this year is a flowery pair in light teal and yellow; Design and color are quite nice but printed on thin paper, not quite their usual quality I must say. Bon Cafe gave us another good quality pair this year with emboss floral fu and chun, same two Chinese characters as Marigold but a different feel and touch altogether.
Continuing the Chinese characters motif we have W Optics with its garden piece that is filled with plenty of colors while Frasers Property went with a cleaner and softer look in a plum blossoms and peonies pair. Eu Yan Sang below is also using the Chinese character chun in a pair of red and yellow floral which is definitely nicer and better compared to their 2017 fish pair and 2018 Eu charm pair.
Received both China Club packets from different collectors and loving them very much, each with it's own flavor and beauty. The top pair has a unique button flap and shape while the single piece below is fabric and has my favorite butterflies. Time for some fish balls and Chinese herbs; Bobo is dishing up a big bowl of their fish balls using a lovely die-cut bowl design with the fish as the insert of course while Wing Joo Loong is going bold with not herbs but my favorite flowers. 7-11 3pcs set did better than previous years in terms of quality, colors and design. I was lucky that hubby got me quite a few sets from their outlet in Changi airport before CNY, they were pretty good bullets for trading.
Deliveroo & Ngai Heng presented the pussy willows which are not commonly seen on red packets design but very commonly found in household during Chinese New Year. Pussy willow (Yín liǔ 银柳) or catkins' appearance of their branches of fluffy, furry blossoms and tall height signifies growth and abundance of fortune. Scroll down to find the other set that also has its share of pussy willows (hint: bottles).
Another beautiful flower that we associate with the Chinese New Year is the plum blossom or mei hua (梅花). It's scientific name is Prunus mume while common names in Japanese is apricot (ume) and Korean maesil. Eastpoint Mall took on these strong fragrant scented flowers in taffy pink, minty green and candy red background while the plum blossoms from Our Tampines Hub are bigger in a softer pink and sapphire blue. Joining the mei hua family is Fullerton Fund Management with a more simpler cartoon like illustration. Next are the koi fishes in soothing mint paired with the magical purple flower duo from Robert Walters are quite an elegant match both front and back. Philip Capital is bright and auspicious with it's five symbolic icons, sycee, pineapples, cranes, koi and bamboos. Did you notice the water lilies in both Robert Walters & Philip Capital?
Kicking off the hotel category is Singapore's largest hotel, the 8th largest in Asia and the 41st largest in the world (Source: Wikipedia June 2019), Marina Bay Sands with two versions of their 4pcs set, the dragon, gold fish and Chinese knot. MPI Generali played with blind embossing and added partial gold embossing on it's blossom, Koi, mandarin oranges and coins while SPC have an all red 4pcs set of floral that is quite lovely.
Didn't manage to trade Magic Clean earlier as collectors were looking for same quality sets in return and I only truly understand their requirements after getting them from a Singapore relative. Also using the fortune cat to gather good luck for the new year is Toyota Borneo and Beautex. While the latter has one (bigger) white kitty up front, the black, red and orange joined forces for greater fortune at the back. As for Toyota, they not only have one but nine little kitties all looking extra fine behind the die-cut casing. Time to visit the sweet chirping birds and we have Hoyu pairing it's white eared sibia with the Koi in glossy finishing.
The Millennium Hotel gave two of it's 4 Star hotels, King's Copthorne and M Social a beautiful pair of birds among the blooming flowers. And not to mention the above eye catching embossed birdies and floral by M1 that flew straight into every collectors heart. Suntec City yellow sparrow and butterfly seems tiny among the big vibrant blossoms but looking gorgeous together.
Societe Genarale has their birdies laminated in four different colors while Chubb small crane and it's butterfly friend can be seen among the many traditional symbols. Here comes the elegant crane paired with the auspicious fish from United Square, both die cut with lively colors while Toshiba brought us the Japanese origami crane, the bird of happiness which is believed to heal the ill if one folded a thousand of them. Next, my page header Transamerica definitely made a lasting impression using the mystical fenghuang and warm peonies. Also carrying the birdie theme are Greenlam Laminates and HP Enterprise, both single designs but just as attractive.
Adding on to the bird series are Tangs lovely yanzi or better known as Chinese Swallow while from BBC Earth we have feathers instead. From the restaurants that brought us the beautiful chirping birds are Imperial Treasure, Crystal Jade and Jumbo Group.
Another hotel that took on the birds motif actually brought back their 2014 parakeet (also spelled as paroquet or paraquet) is non other than Conrad Centennial and this round they have given us a lovely window view. More Singapore hotels' packets from Carlton with a big joyful piggy, Furama with a sea of colorful semi circles, Ritz Carlton red & silver fortune charms and Holiday Inn Atrium showing off their own buildings. Not to be missed is the year on year, an amazing journey for Carlton's zodiac since 2010 while Ritz moved away from their darker single floral tone to a light duo charms and lastly Atrium although recycling their building pair from previous year this time round they have included the logo "H", whether deliberately or mistakenly left out in 2018 that I do not know ><
Another building themed series that I am lucky to own is from L'zzie and their signature European landmarks continues to warm the hearts of many collectors. Do you remember those buildings from the lion dancing section? Jump back to the top to find them.

The airlines are up next and Singapore Airlines collaboration with Silkair this year on a pair of simple floral prints while it's affiliate, the concept store KrisShop together with The Paper Bunny took on the batik prints using the classy rose gold on a mysterious maroon backing and dressed the character Fu in felt. Next are a few more hotel series before we move on to the kids corner; simple in red and gold are both Shangri La and Regent while another catchy floral duo is from Amara, a local 4 stars hotel.
The famous POSB and DBS that has become one of our local favorites not just for collection but for distribution. Even though they have no presence in Malaysia I'd say they have exceeded their coverage in terms of awareness. Continuing with their 2018 Deepavali cover envelope design, POSB CNY pair as well as their Raya single are both bright and yellow. Wait, 2019 Deepavali is even brighter with a refreshing lemony shade on it's cover casing as well as it's inner packet, perfectly matched with a bright blue piece.
From DBS, we also have a cheerful pair of blue and orange for their mass market version while DBS Treasures took on a darker tone of red with textured floral for their single piece mass market as well as their Private Client edition and finally the velvety DBS Private pair with a slightly taller envelope casing. Their Raya packets are even nicer, loving the dark green floral casing as well as the lighter green shade for the boy and girl pair while their Deepavali is purplelicious all the way with the touch of a different type of floral.
*Special thanks to Mei Fern for getting me the POSB and DBS Raya & Deepavali packets as my Singapore sources were not able to grab me any.
Another kids themed set that has been around for many years from the bankers is non other than the OCBC Mighty Savers and they have quite a delightful continuation series. Do check out my collage of these happy children over at my 2020 Singapore page or check back in a couple of weeks time to see my latest 2021 update then.
Novotel is the only hotel series I have with the adorable children and reunion theme and they are on the flaps which are not the normal ones we see on any money packets. They are indeed bigger in size while the front is filled with circles in random patterns and of course their logo, loving the pair so much! Another fun and lovely quality set flying by is non other than Scoot Air with their Super Scootee, the airline’s “agent of escape”. Special thanks and hugs to Mei Fern for these kawaii treasures (xoxo).
How do you find Lays and their 8pcs Yanxi Palace sticker theme? They added simple designs on the packets this year as compared to 2018 plain envelopes. Lays started with a set of (smaller) stickers for additional decoration on their 8pcs family set that also carries the monkey zodiac in 2016. They didn't print any angpow in 2017, resumed only in 2018 by shifting the illustration over to a bigger set of stickers and continued the same in 2019. The 3 sets when put together truly make one big happy family.
I like to see the shade of purple on red packets as it's not a common color to use and so makes any design stand out in the crowd. And nothing stands out in the crowd more than the little matrons also known as Matryoshka dolls, Babushka dolls, stacking dolls, nesting dolls or Russian dolls. Compass One brought these unique form of wood art to celebrate the Chinese New Year and the joint pair is absolutely delightful. The boys and girls are out to play from Playmade, Ajinomoto, Wonderful Maid, Copy Boy, ACI while HP Singapore olden day China boys and girls illustration is a classic 4pcs set that I am so lucky and happy to have them in my collection thanks to Luyee .
Lighting up the year ahead is Senoko Energy "Fu" light-bulb and Union Gas shimmering bucket of sycee while more traditionally via the Chinese lanterns we have Monsoon pair in yellow and red, the sweet pink lanterns from Far East Mall, the mysterious maroon lantern from Armani, Guardian purple lanterns together with mandarin orange, Chinese fan and coins, HDB 4pcs set with lantern-flaps and Monkey Shoulder 5pcs orange color theme that is also filled with lots of small liquor related icons.
Who's thirsty for more beverages? Coca Cola definitely has the biggest set this year with their 8pcs coke bottles set that comes in three different versions. Malaysia has one normal and another box version which is smaller in size then Singapore box set. Both the boxes are die-cut designed to show off the individual coke bottles within (spot the pussy willows?). Next is McDonald with just yellow and red tone this year, leaving behind the sundae cone, burger, apple pie as well as the more colorful shades and the triangle flaps from 2018. On the other hand yellow and red is the color of their logo, the iconic yellow Golden Arches resting against a bright red background. The color red is stimulating hence increases heart rate, which helps to jump start our appetite. The color yellow is associated with happiness and is the most visible color in daylight, hence the M sign is always easier to spot on a crowded road ><
A big squeal from Starbucks this year, back louder than their doggies and roosters pairs before while another horsey galloped into my hands just few weeks back giving me the opportunity to showcase the last six years of Mitsubishi Electric horse, ram, gold and koi fishes. While they have maintained the same size and flap design from 2014 to 2016, they moved on to the fish theme in 2016 with a single piece gold fish for two consecutive years before taking on the koi fishes in 2018. Paper quality wise is also different every year with my favorite purple pink and glitters in 2016 as well as soft fabric in 2014 and a much thicker fabric in 2019.
Dell EMC from Malaysia is tall, slim and glossy attaching their blessing to four different gadgets while Dell Singapore is chubbier with velvety finishing and just keyboards. Both comes in a similar plain screen folding casing and looks pretty cool complimenting one another. Thanks to my IT pals back in my ex-company as well as Apryl for these IT goodies!
